Levels are the kinds of membership you offer. Each level sets what a membership costs, who it is for, how long it runs and how its dues are taxed.
Before you start
- Only an Org admin can create or change levels.
- Have each level's price and its GST/HST treatment to hand. A level cannot be saved without a tax treatment and tax code.
- Set your default term in Organization Settings → Terms & renewal rules first, if levels will use it.
Steps
- Go to Organization Settings → Membership levels and click Add level.
- Under Identity, enter the Name, a Description, and Benefits, one per line. Benefits are shown to members and on the back of their membership card.
- Under Who it is for, choose the Type: Individual, Household or Organizational. For organizational levels, set Seats included, and turn on Allow extra seats with a Price of an extra seat if organizations can buy more.
- Under Price and term, enter the price and choose the Term: The organization's default, Anniversary, Fixed date, Rolling monthly or Life — no end date. For dated terms, choose the Term length (1, 2 or 3 years). Optionally set a Grace period, days for this level; left blank, the organization default applies.
- Under Tax on dues (GST/HST), choose the Tax treatment and Tax code.
- Under Tax receipts, turn on receipting only if your organization is a registered charity and the level qualifies.
- Under Eligibility and progression, add an Eligibility note if needed, and turn on Applications need approval if staff must approve new members. To move members on automatically, choose a level under Moves on to and when: After a number of years, On a date or Only when staff move them.
- Under Visibility, set Available on the join page and Members appear in the directory. Members doesn't have a member directory yet, so the directory setting has no effect for now.
- Click Create level.
What happens next
The level is listed with its type, price, term, tax treatment, receipting and the number of members on it. It can be chosen when you add a member.
A price change applies from each member's next renewal and never re-prices a term already started. Automatic progression is queued and takes effect at the member's next renewal.
From the … menu on a level you can:
- Edit it. Its type cannot change once it has members.
- Duplicate it as a starting point for a similar level.
- Retire it. It stops being offered to new members, but members already on it carry on and renew as before. Restore brings it back.
- Delete it. This is only offered for a level that has never had members.
Two levels cannot have the same name. A new level with no event price set is charged the non-member rate at events until you add a price for it.
