A membership lapses when its grace period ends without a renewal. A monthly membership lapses when a month goes unpaid past grace. An application that is never paid or approved lapses after the number of days in Unpaid applications expire after, days.

What changes:

  • The status becomes Lapsed and the member is Not in good standing, so member pricing and members-only events no longer apply.
  • A membership card is voided and says "This membership has lapsed."
  • The renewal link in their notices no longer works. A member who opens it sees "This renewal can no longer be completed online", with a request to contact your organization.

What stays: the whole record. The member record shows "Lapsed on [date]. Nothing was deleted; reinstating adds a new term to this record." Invoices, payments, membership history and the timeline are all kept.

Renewal notices that you have set to go out after the renewal date are still sent on schedule. To bring the member back, open their record and click Reinstate. See Bringing a lapsed member back.

You can find lapsed members under the Lapsed tab on Members, and recently lapsed members on Renewals.
