Reinstate a lapsed member to add a new term to their existing record. Nothing was deleted when they lapsed.

Before you start

  • Only a Lapsed membership can be reinstated. A lapsed member cannot be renewed; you see "This membership has lapsed. Reinstate it instead." if you try.
  • Reinstating uses the member's current level, or the level queued for their renewal if there is one. To move them to a different level, reinstate first, then use Change level.
  • Your organization's usual rule is set in Organization Settings → Terms & renewal rules under When a lapsed member comes back.

Steps

  1. Open the lapsed member's record and click Reinstate.
  2. Under Continuous service, choose:
    • Restart — a new term from today; service counted from today. Earlier terms stay on the record, but years of continuous service start again.
    • Resume — backfill from when it ended; service preserved. The new term starts from the old end date, and continuous service keeps counting from the original date. The dialog starts on your organization's usual rule and tells you if you pick the other one.
  3. If you already have the money, turn on Payment has been received and fill in Received by, Date received and Reference (optional). Otherwise the reinstatement invoice is issued and left open.
  4. Click Reinstate.

What happens next

The membership is Active straight away with a new term, and a reinstatement invoice appears under Dues and payments. If you left it unpaid, record the payment when it arrives. An invoice left unpaid past Days an invoice may be overdue costs the member good standing.

With Resume, the term runs on from the old end date to the first renewal date after today. If Charge for the terms that were missed is on in your settings, the invoice includes the missed terms as well.

Membership history records the reinstatement and which option you chose. Any membership card the member already holds is no longer void and updates to show the membership as current; they do not need a new one.
