Add a donation to your renewal flow with an Add-on question. Members who choose it have the amount added to their renewal invoice as a separate line.
Before you start
- Only an Org admin can change renewal questions.
- Decide on a suggested amount and whether members can choose their own amount.
- Decide how GST/HST applies to the line. Members does not choose this for you. Ask your accountant if you are unsure.
Steps
- Go to Organization Settings → Renewal questions.
- If a version is already live, click Edit questions to start a draft. Members keep being asked the live version until you publish.
- Click Add question.
- In Question shown to the member, write the offer, for example "Add a donation to the Bursary Fund". Use Helper text (optional) for one line on what the money does.
- Set Type to Add-on, and choose How often to ask.
- Under Price:
- Tick The member chooses the amount (a donation) to let members enter their own amount. The box then becomes Suggested amount, and the minimum is shown next to the tick box.
- Leave it unticked for a fixed Amount.
- Choose the GST/HST code for the line.
- Under How it reads on the invoice, enter the line description. If you leave it blank, the question wording is used.
- Click Add question.
- Click Preview as member to check it, then Publish version and confirm with Publish.
What happens next
The add-on appears in the renewal flow under "Add something to your renewal". It is always optional and is never selected for the member.
When a member selects it, the amount is added to their renewal invoice as its own line, with the description you set and its own tax treatment. The member pays one invoice for dues and donation together.
If a member enters their own amount, they see "Enter an amount." for a blank amount and "The smallest amount is …" for one below the minimum.
Renewals already under way keep the version they started on. Members due but not yet started, and every renewal after them, are asked the new version.
Members does not issue a separate charitable receipt for an add-on. Whether and how to receipt a donation is a question for your accountant.
