When a donor calls or writes to change their monthly gift, you can make most changes for them in the plan window. Each charge on the plan posts as a linked gift.

Before you start

  • The donor has a recurring plan.
  • To change the fund, know the fund's name exactly as it appears in Gifts → Funds.

Steps

  1. Open the plan. On the donor's Giving tab, click Manage on the gift under Recurring giving. Or go to Gifts → Recurring and click the plan's row. The donor's record only lists plans that aren't canceled; to find a canceled plan, use the Canceled filter on Gifts → Recurring.
  2. Check the summary: Amount, Next charge, Plan lifetime, Fund, Started, Charges made and Payment method.
  3. To change the schedule, edit Amount (CAD), Frequency (Monthly, Quarterly or Annual) or Fund under Edit schedule, then click Save changes. You'll see "Plan updated." If nothing changed, you'll see "No changes to save."
  4. Use the buttons below to change the plan's state:
    • Pause (Active plans) stops charges until you resume.
    • Resume (Paused plans) restarts charges.
    • Skip next (Active or Past due plans) moves the next charge on by one period.
    • Cancel plan asks "Cancel this recurring plan?" before it cancels.
    • Reactivate (Canceled or Completed plans) makes the plan Active again.
  5. Review Charge history for past charges and their receipt status.

What happens next

If the plan is set up through Stripe, Donors makes the change in Stripe first. If Stripe refuses, you see an error and the plan doesn't change. Changing the amount adds an entry to the donor's timeline. Pausing doesn't bill the donor later for the months it was paused.

A plan canceled in Stripe can't be reactivated. You'll see "This gift was canceled at Stripe and can’t be restarted — the donor needs to set up a new monthly gift."

What staff can't do:

  • Enter, see or update the donor's card. The Update card, Retry now and Send update-card link buttons don't work yet; they show "Card actions arrive when Stripe is connected." The donor updates their own card on your Manage giving page.
  • Edit the schedule of a Canceled or Completed plan. Reactivate it first.
