What you see

There's no Generate receipt button on the gift, or clicking it shows an error such as "Could not generate the receipt."

Why it happens

Generate receipt only appears in the Receipt panel of a saved gift whose status is Needs receipt. It doesn't appear when:

  • The status is Not required. Either the donor's Tax receipt preference is Do not receipt, or the gift is below your Minimum amount to receipt.
  • The gift already has a receipt. You see Send receipt, Print receipt and View PDF instead. Trying to receipt it again returns "This gift already has receipt" followed by the number.
  • The gift was imported. Imported historical gifts have no receipt panel.
  • You're still adding the gift. The receipt panel appears once the gift is saved and reopened.

Missing receipt settings don't hide the button, but the receipt will be incomplete. The Receipt center shows No authorized signature yet when no signature is uploaded. A receipt page warns when your charity address isn't set.

Fix

  1. Open the gift and check the badge in the Receipt panel.
  2. If it says Not required, open the donor and check their Tax receipt preference. Changing it affects gifts you record from then on. A gift already marked Not required keeps that status.
  3. If it already has a receipt number, send or print that receipt. To change it, use Void, then Generate receipt again.
  4. Go to Organization Settings → Receipts. Make sure the legal charity name, registration number, registered address, signatory name and an authorized signature are all filled in. Click Save receipt settings.
  5. Try Generate receipt again, or select the gift on the Needs review tab in Receipts and click Generate.

If that doesn't work

Tell the 2Labs team the donor, the gift date and amount, the receipt status the gift shows, and the exact error message.
