Use a donor's Relationships tab to group them into a household and connect them to related people and organizations. Soft credit lets a related contact see a shared gift on their record while your revenue is counted only once.

Before you start

  • Anyone on your team can link households and relationships.
  • The other person or organization must already be in People.

Steps

  1. Open the donor's profile from People and click the Relationships tab.
  2. To add them to a household, click Link on the Household panel. Pick an existing household from the list, or click + Create a new household, check the Household name, and click Create household. A new household makes this donor the head of household.
  3. To link a person, click Link on Related people, or Link a person. Search for the person, choose a Relationship type, such as Spouse, Partner, Parent, Sibling, Family member, Friend or Referred, and click Link.
  4. To link an organization, click Link on Organizations & affiliations. Search for the organization, choose a type, such as Employer, Board member, Staff or Funder, and click Link.
  5. Before you click Link, set Soft-credit shared gifts to both. It's on by default for Spouse and Partner.
  6. To undo a person or organization link, open the row's ⋯ menu and click Remove.

What happens next

The link shows on both records. For one-way types, the other record shows the reverse, for example Child for Parent, or Employee for Employer.

Household members are soft-credited with each other's gifts. The Household panel shows the members and the household's combined giving, with each gift counted once. A contact can be in only one household; joining another moves them.

The Giving card on the tab shows Hard credit (the donor's own gifts), Soft credit (gifts credited to them through households or relationships) and Credited giving (the two together). Soft credit is for reporting only. It never changes your organization's revenue and never creates a receipt; the tax receipt stays with the donor who gave.
